Catfish prices surge as supply catches down with demand in Delta   2008-09-02 - SGGP

VietNamNet Bridge - With many distressed catfish farmers in the Mekong Delta going out of business and supply dwindling as a result, prices have been rising sharply.

They have gone up by around VND1,000 per kilogram, said Nguyen Van Hai, head of the Can Tho City-based Thoi An Seafood Co-operative, with processors paying VND15,200-15,500 for the best quality fish.

For slightly inferior quality – fish that were harvested after the optimum time – the prices have gone up to VND14,200-14,500, he said.

Farmers are happy that the prices are increasing virtually daily and do not want to sell to processors now since they are waiting for higher prices, he said.

A farmer explained that these prices are still VND500-1,500 per kilogram lower than the market price.

Phan Van Danh, chairman of the An Giang Aquaculture and Seafood Processing Association, admitted prices remain low.

Almost half the farmers in An Giang Province have stopped breeding catfish following losses in the last few months, he added, sending output plunging by 20-30 percent.
