DongA Bank says first-half profit more than double   2008-07-10 - Bloomberg

Vietnam’s DongA Commercial Bank said pretax profit more than doubled in the first half as it introduced new banking services to attract clients.

Clients make transactions at a DongA Bank branch in Ho Chi Minh City.

Profit rose to VND404 billion (US$24 million), from VND190 billion last year, the bank said in an e-mailed statement Wednesday.

The Ho Chi Minh City-based lender’s total assets were VND33 trillion ($1.9 billion) as of June 30, an increase from VND19 trillion.

“In the first half, our individual clients increased rapidly to more than two million,” from about one million previously, Tran Phuong Binh, the chief executive officer said in a telephone interview from HCMC.

DongA Bank introduced mobile-phone banking and internet payment systems this year, the statement said.

The bank currently has 137 branches in the Southeast Asian nation.
