Vietnam earmarks $23.8 bil to upgrade ports by 2020   2009-12-31 - Thanh Nien

Between VND360 trillion and 440 trillion (US$19.5-23.8 billion) will be invested in developing the country’s seaports by 2020 under a project approved recently by the government.

The plan, posted on the government’s website Sunday, will focus on upgrading many of the existing ports to international standard.

Some like the Van Phong Transshipment Port in the central province of Khanh Hoa, and the Hai Phong International Gateway Port will get priority and additional funding by 2015.

The country’s ports are expected to handle 500-600 million tons of goods annually by 2015, increasing to 900-1,100 million tons by 2020.

Vietnam now has 39 seaports.
