Seminar talks investment promotion amidst economic crisis   2009-03-27 - VNA

Promoting investment amidst the 2009 world economic crisis and protecting the environment in industrial, export processing and economic zones topped the agenda of a seminar held in northern Bac Ninh province on March 26.

The seminar was part of the Investment Promotion Conference hosted by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).

Addressing the function, a reprehensive from the Republic of Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) said that Vietnam remained an important destination for RoK businesses.

Nearly 83 percent of interviewed RoK businesses said that they were optimistic and pleased with Vietnam ’s investment environment and affirmed their continued investment in the 86-million-people country.

In the number of projects, the RoK ranks first among foreign investors in Vietnam with 1,686 projects, accounting for 21 percent of the country’s total FDI projects, generating jobs for 354,000 labourers.

However, the KOTRA representative warned that ROK businesses’ confidence in Vietnam ’s investment environment has been decreasing due to complicated administrative procedures, low-quality human resources and high transaction costs.

To attract investment, Vietnam should improve its investment environment, strengthen state management of business costs and adopt a master plan for supporting industries, he said, adding that his agency wishes to cooperate with Vietnamese agencies in addressing arising problems.

According to the MPI, environmental protection in IZs, EPZs and EZs sees a lot of limitations. Only 20 percent of 219 newly-established IZs have wastewater treatment plants which can treat only 30 percent of the total volume of wastewater. In some IZs, air pollution has exceeded the permitted level.

Participants at the seminar suggested that the country have policies supporting enterprises in the IZs in order to minimise the environment pollution, contributing to the sustainable development of IZs and EPZs.
