Hong Kong Airlines suspends HCMC flights; poor demand blamed   2008-11-28 - Thanh Nien

Hong Kong Airlines has suspended flights between Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam said without disclosing the reason.

But a former employee of the carrier’s HCMC office pointed to poor patronage and a shortage of aircraft for the move.

Hong Kong Airlines was facing fierce competition from Cathay Pacific and Vietnam Airlines on the Hong Kong-HCMC route, especially after demand eased due to the global economic slowdown.

Cathay Pacific flies twice daily between Hong Kong and HCMC while Vietnam Airlines has one flight a day.

Dragonair, a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific, operates a daily Hong Kong-Hanoi service.

But Hong Kong Airlines continues to operate four flights a week between Hong Kong and Hanoi.

It only began flying to HCMC in September last year.
