International port begun in Ba Ria-Vung Tau   2008-10-14 - Vietnamnet

Three construction packages under the Cai Mep-Thi Vai International Port Construction Project in the coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau were kicked-off during a ground-breaking ceremony Tuesday morning.

Upon completion, Cai Mep-Thi Vai port together with other ports along the Thi Vai River will form a complete marine transport system of international standard.

The USD 700 million project funded by special loans from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and a corresponding sum from Vietnam will cover the construction of four terminals for ships, a bridge and an access road connecting the port with National Highway No.51.

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, who was present at the ceremony, urged all parties involved in the project to keep to the schedule and ensure the quality of the project with special attention to labour safety and the environment.

“Our engineers and staff will bring their abilities and adundant experience to this project for satisfactory and timely completion and we also will not forget ‘Safety First’,” said Nakagome, a representative of TOA Corporation, which is responsible for the package to build Cai Mep container terminal.

The Cai Mep-Thi Vai International Port Construction Project approved by the Prime Minister in 2004 initially encountered a lot of difficulties. Particularly, progress of the project has been delayed due to continuous price increases of construction materials.

The Ministry of Transport has awarded contracts to three eligible JO contractors. The implementation of the three packages under the project will play a significant role in the development of Vietnam’s port system as well as meet the demand for extending marine trade with other countries in the world.
