Vietnam’s CPI estimated to rise 0.2 percent in October   2008-10-02 - ThanhNienNews

Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) is expected to rise slightly to 0.2 percent in October over September as global commodity prices stabilize and shortages of some items ease, the Government Office said Tuesday.

The Vietnamese government, in the remaining months of this year, will continue to focus on curbing inflation to ensure macroeconomic stability, said Government Office Chairman Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Vietnam’s month-on-month CPI fell to 0.18 percent in September, after rises of 1.56 percent in August, 1.13 percent in July, 2.14 percent in June and 3.91 percent in May, the General Statistics Office said last week.

The government will maintain a price freeze on electricity, water and bus tickets until the end of 2008 and will step up surveillance of prices, Phuc said.

The state will also provide assistance to firms involved in purchasing commodities for export, especially agricultural and fishery products.

Vietnam posted gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6.52 percent in the first nine months of this year. In the fourth quarter, the country has to post economic growth of 8.1 percent, to ensure fulfilling the government’s 2008 economic growth target of 7 percent, Phuc said.

Home Affairs Minister Tran Van Tuan said the government had drafted a trial plan in which heads of commune-level people’s committees would be elected by local citizens.

Currently district people’s committees are in charge of appointments.
