Samsung may invest in wireless handset factory in Vietnam   2008-02-05 - TBKTSG

Samsung Electronics Co., Asia’s largest maker of semiconductors, flat screens and mobile phones, may invest in a manufacturing facility for wireless handsets in Vietnam, according to a government announcement.

Samsung Electronics Co., Asia’s largest maker of semiconductors, flat screens and mobile phones, may invest in a manufacturing facility for wireless handsets in Vietnam, according to a government announcement.

“We’ve been considering building a mobile-phone plant in Vietnam, but nothing has been finalized yet,’’ Kwak Bum Joon, a spokesman at Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung, said over the weekend by telephone from Seoul.

Foreign direct investment in Vietnam jumped to more than US$20 billion last year from $12 billion in 2006, with companies including Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, and Compal Electronics Inc.

taking advantage of the country’s cheaper labor costs.

Intel Corp., the world’s biggest semiconductor maker, started building a $1 billion factory in Ho Chi Minh City in March, and Taipei-based Hon Hai plans to invest $5 billion in five years to make parts for personal computers, digital cameras and mobile phones.

The proposed factory and investments by other overseas companies has led to “a pressing demand in training the workforce,” Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told reporters at a year-end press meeting over the weekend.
